It was a tough weekend for South Shields' trio Eve Blakey, Grace Boyes and Rebecca Ward, as higher tier opposition defeated them in the FA Cup.
FA Women’s National League Division One side Leeds United ran out 4-1 winners in the FA Cup Second Round Qualifying, as South Shields struggled with injuries and only one substitute.
Loanee Boyes gave Shields the lead, reacting fast to turn home after Leeds failed to clear a corner just after the half-hour mark. However, Abby Brown scored shortly after to tie the game at the break.
That’s when numbers started to hurt the Mariners, with Brown scoring a second two minutes after the restart. Rebecca Hunt added a third before Shannon Durkin completed the scoring in the 63rd minute.
Goalscorer Boyes, along with Blakey played the full 90, while Ward played 45 minutes on her return from injury.
Hartlepool came out 4-3 winners against Blackburn Community Ladies to set up a Third Round Qualifying tie with Chorley, however, Hannah Skull played no part as she waits for her opportunity.
Wallsend had another game free week, but return to action on Sunday with a trip to York City. It’s back to league action for South Shields as well, who head to Harrogate. There’s no game this weekend for Hartlepool though, their attention turns to a trip to South Shields on October 20.
